About twice a year I drop in to HMP Spring Hill, an open prison near Aylesbury, to talk to the ex-offenders about a career in the data cabling industry. The first time I was apprehensive, not knowing whether I'd be facing a bunch of hardened villains, but that was not the case, quite the opposite in fact. I've met about fifty guys and every one of them has shown real respect and a genuine keenness to want to settle back into normal life with a foot on a career ladder. They attend training courses at the prison but face massive prejudice when they are released.
I'm now talking to Tracy in the Job Club at the prison with a view to giving a few of the guys some work experience during the last few months of their sentences. I wouldn't allow someone on a customers site that had been convicted of stealing from premises but most of the offences would pose no threat at all in a work environment. I'd like to go further and get a group of companies involved in a scheme nationwide to give work experience and even full employment to ex-offenders.
I'd be interested to hear other peoples views on this. Leave a comment against my blog or go to the Lynx Networks website Contact Us page and send me a message.
