The IEEE are just ratifying the physical standards for 40Gb and 100Gb Ethernet fibre links. These will require multiple fibre cores for each link and the multi-fibre MPO or MTP connectors will be used. Pre-terminated cables will be the simplest solution because on-site termination will be more difficult for the compact connectors.
Applications for 40Gb and 100Gb Ethernet are likely to be limited to the data centre. Lengths of up to 200m with multimode cable are likely to be the most common installations.
