A colleague just passed me an article from yesterday's Mail on Sunday. It's about how a primary school used its surveillance camera to find an 8-year old girl's missing shoes. They discovered that a friend had hidden the shoes in a locker as a prank. The girl was reunited the shoes that she needed to get home, and her parents were happy that the camera system had been used to achieve the outcome. The culprit was punished with a warning letter, and her parents we're horrified that the system was used in this way.
At Lynx Networks we install IP camera surveillance systems in schools and we are always interested in this type of debate. Personally, I can see both sides of the argument but fall in favour of the systems as long as the schools adhere to a strict code to avoid inappropriate use.
Hot off the press; the same colleague has just forwarded this link about a school having to remove cameras from children's toilets following furious protests from parents.
