170,000 tonnes of copper was used in 2005 to make telecommunications cable but only 1,000 tonnes of cable was removed and recycled. Clearly this has a significant effect on the environment. However, anyone involved in a cabling project can make a positive impact by considering the three R's of sustainability: Reduce, Reuse and recycle.
Reduce the amount of cable required by not providing more links than is needed, reuse existing links that are perfectly good for the job and recycle any cable that can be removed.
